Capacitors

A capacitor is an energy storage device widely used in electronic circuits to block direct current while allowing alternating current to pass. They are used in filter networks to smooth the output current of power supplies and stabilise system voltage.

Why use capacitors?

Capacitors can have a wide range of applications in electrical circuits:

Power factor correction: Capacitors are a purely reactive electrical component. They can be used to offset inductive loads such as motors to improve power quality.

Harmonic filtering and power conditioning: Given its ability to store energy, a capacitor does not instantaneously change value with changes in system voltage levels. This response time allows the capacitor to provide smoothing of output current fluctuations.

Energy storage:A capacitor stores electrical energy when connected into a powered circuit. This energy is dissipated when the power circuit is disconnected, acting as a temporary battery. Capacitors are commonly used in electronic devices to maintain power supply while batteries are being changed, or can provide extended service capacity for uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).

Motor starters:Capacitors can be used to alter the current to one or more windings of a single phase AC induction motor to create a rotating magnetic field. The force of the magnetic field provides sufficient torque to allow it to begin to rotate.
